Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is one of the global hubs for cutting edge medicine. The metropolitan area itself is home to 24 hospitals, attracting people from all over the world in need of healthcare that can only be provided in Pittsburgh. While traveling great distances, often for extremely long periods of time, or unexpectedly, patients and their families can find themselves either stranded while they wait for medical care, or unable to pay the stratospheric price of a hotel for weeks or months on end. Enter, Family House: a local charity that provides not only affordable long term housing, but the strength of a community, and a sense of inspiration and hope to all who seek refuge under their roof. “Family House” offers a glimpse of this very unique charity, the people that make it special, and the community that makes it possible.

Directed by David Urbanic & David Spak
Audio engineering & post production, Peter-Michel Natishan
Jib operator, Victor J. Pancerev
Editing & post production, David Urbanic

Produced in-part with the support of UPMC, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery Artificial Heart Program, Heartware Corporation, Family House Pittsburgh, and in conjunction with the film, “Function v. Emotion.”

Pittsburgh’s Bodiography Contemporary Ballet unites the worlds of art and medicine in their full length ballet, “HEART: Function v. Emotion.” Full length theme ballets are rare, but no more than “HEART” which places professional dancers along side real-life cardiologists and transplant patients in perhaps the world’s only ballet focused on raising awareness about organ donation and transplantation, and heart disease. “Function v. Emotion” explores the coming together of the seemingly dissimilar worlds of medical science (function) and dance (emotion), and the unexpected emotional reawakening experienced by the transplant patients involved.
