David Urbanic has always been an artist. In the early days, Urbanic excelled at his pen and pencil renderings of both the Lamborghini Countach and Garfield the cat, which were a hit among his elementary school classmates. As he lurched awkwardly through high school he found his passion for photography, filmmaking, writing, and his profound distaste for higher education. As his semi-official hometown of State College, Pennsylvania happens to be home to Penn State University, growing up there soured David to the prospect of mainstream higher education in a great way. After high school he moved to St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands), where he lived and worked on a sailboat, weathered a direct hit from a category four hurricane (Georges, September 1998 aboard S/V “Survival”, Vieques, Puerto Rico), and survived a number of near-death experiences involving rocks and drowning. Despite his exotic locale and adventurous lifestyle, David opted to return to the continental United States to pursue a career in photography.
David attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where he studied photography and quickly dropped out. Unimpressed with the college lifestyle, the program’s focus on product photography and photojournalism—in contrast to his own “fine arts” interests—Urbanic decided to throw caution to the wind. What followed has been nearly a decade of particularly inspired independent artistic exploit. None of which would have occurred with a highly specialized degree in photography from a leading educational institution in that field.
Urbanic has firmly established himself as a dedicated, if not stubborn, independent photographer, filmmaker, and graphic designer. To date, he has produced numerous music videos, corporate and industrial promotional videos, and several films. He has toured the United States and Europe as a photographer and filmmaker with a number of bands, and produced several documentary films to that regard. He also continues to work regularly as a band photographer, and as a graphic designer, creating CD and DVD packaging for clients internationally.
David Urbanic currently lives in Phoenix, Arizona. In addition to his steady stream of music videos, films and visual work, Urbanic also works as the Artistic Director and writer for indieonthemove.com, an online tour booking resource and music venue database for independent musicians. He is completing a memoir of his life as a stubbornly independent artist—the bizarre and outrageous experiences that have resulted thereof, and what it takes to pursue a career as a freelancer against all sensible odds.
